In this 2018 report, the Mental Health Commissioner stated that Aotearoa New Zealand needs to broaden its focus from mental health and addiction to mental wellbeing and recovery.
In February 2021, the monitoring and advocacy function of the Mental Health Commissioner was transferred to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission.
